P J Crowley, former US state department spokesman, tells Al Jazeera that he thinks Gaddafi's days are over:
I think this is a combination of six months of efforts not just by the United States and NATO but by other countries in the region contributing, including Qatar,  its'a day we expected to come but ... events are unfolding much more rapidly than I personally had envisioned.
"In the shift from a Gaddafi-led government to this transitional national council, it's very important that the TNC is able to demonstrate quickly to all of Libya that it's the appropriate vehicle to lead this transition.
"Unlike say Egypt, where remarkable events unfolded earlier this year, Egypt has strong institutions of government that survived a transition.
"For a leader like Gaddafi, he's made sure for 40 years that there was no competing power centre to him so in the collapse of the Gaddafi regime, there's not going to be the same institutional strength to support this transition
"Libya's going to need a lot of outside assistance ... not only in the day-to-day functioning of a state, but also in setting up [mechanisms] so the Libyan people can chose a new leadership."
Two of Muammar Gaddafi's sons are now in the custody of Libyan rebels. Earlier Al Jazeera spoke to Mohammad Gaddafi, after he had surrendered. There was the sound of gunfire before the phone line went down.

But the head of the opposition National Transitional Council told Al Jazeera he was not hurt.

Rebels waving opposition flags and firing into the air drove into Green Square, a symbolic showcase the government had until recently used for mass demonstrations in support of the now embattled Gaddafi.

Rebels immediately began calling it Martyrs Square.

Earlier, a convoy of rebels entered a western neighbourhood of the city.

Rebels said the whole of the city was under their control except Gaddafi's Bab Al-Aziziyah stronghold.

US President Barack Obama said on Sunday Gaddafi's "iron fist" regime had reached a 'tipping point' and the Libyan autocrat must leave now to avoid further bloodshed.

In a written statement, Obama also called on Libyan rebels who have surged  into Tripoli to respect human rights, show leadership, preserve the  institutions of the Libyan state and move towards democracy.

Mohammed Dangor, South Africa's ambassador to Libya, told Al Jazeera he has no knowledge of any of his country’s planes in Tripoli.

"I have no knowledge of any South African planes in Tripoli ... but Nato should know, since they control the airport and no plane can land without their permission," he said.

Dangor confirmed that most of South Africa's diplomatic mission had already left Tripoli on Saturday, with some officials still in Djerba in Tunisia and others in Tripoli.

He denied allegations that he left on a South African defence aircraft, saying that he left to Djerba on a World Food Program jet before making his way to Tunis, Dubai and finally Johannesburg.
